Is Sedation Right for Me?
Does the thought of getting into the dental chair paralyze you with fear and fill you with dread? Then sedation may be a good choice for your dental experiences. When you’re put into fight-or-flight mode, your pain threshold goes down, and the anticipation makes you hypersensitive to every sensation. The main part in making you comfortable and experiencing as little pain as possible is eliminating your anxiety. Obviously, it’s easier said than done, which is why our dentists can help by administering sedation.
Before you’re approved for sedation, we will have a thorough consultation to get your complete health history, including any medications you are currently taking (both over-the-counter and prescribed). Once you’re approved for sedation, you’ll need to arrange for a ride to and from your appointment, since some sedation medications take a little bit to wear off, making it unsuitable for you to drive. What Are the Different Types of Sedation?
Here at Great Falls Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we have three different types of sedation medications available; the type chosen for you depends on your medical history and the type of dental procedure you’re getting at our dentistry. The three types are as follows:
- Oral sedation: Afraid of needles? Then this type of sedation is perfect for you! The medication is given by mouth by way of a pill that is swallowed or dissolved underneath your tongue. You’ll feel the effects of the oral sedation within minutes.
- Inhalation conscious sedation: With inhalation conscious sedation (nitrous oxide), you inhale the sedation in gas form through a nasal hood. Compared to other types of medications, nitrous oxide doesn’t do so much for the pain, but instead, is a great anti-anxiety medication. With nitrous oxide, you’ll be able to relax and not obsess over the procedure.
- IV conscious sedation: As the name implies, IV conscious sedation is administered through IV, which is directly into your veins. This is one of the most potent types of sedation, which means it’s reserved for major procedures. Because it’s such a heavy type of sedation, it does take a little bit of time to recover from.
